Kurumi botan labCreation of clothe-lined buttons
edited by Asako Hishiki and Kanako Takahashi
What is kurumi botanKurumi Botan くるみ ボタン, literally 'covered button', is in Japan a retro craft object used extensively in the fifties by Japanese women for home manufacture of family clothing. If you need buttons, the haberdashery of the time could create, with the chosen fabrics, kurumi botan with different types of decoration.
Kurumi comes from the verb Kurumu 包む, which means 'to wrap'. Its pronunciation is reminiscent of the sound of the Japanese word for walnut, which reminds us of its shape and its small size.
The laboratoryThis workshop has as its purpose the design and production of buttons of different sizes to be used to create with us earrings, bracelets, brooches, elastic and decorative function on bags or t-shirts.
Participants will be able to compete with the main Japanese patterns making them on fabric with stamps and brushes. In fact, Asako and Kanako will introduce us to the world of traditional motifs such as Asanoha 麻の葉, Kikkō 亀甲, Shippō 七宝, Hishi-mon 菱文 and many others known historically to be used on kimono and made with traditional techniques such as Edo Komon 江戸小紋 and the Katazome 型染め.
Every motif, from the simplest to the most complex, has its own history and its development. We will use some fine fabrics made with the shibori technique traditionally created at Arimatsu, in the Nagoya area.
