held by Leila Magrini

What is sashiko

Sashiko (刺し子) is an embroidery technique born in Japan in the Edo period as a way to fix damaged clothes or to create new ones with parts of old and discarded dresses.

This kind of embroidery is always hand-made so that one of its most evident characteristics is the little irregularity in the stitches it is made of. Despite of this, there are strict rules to obey doing this kind of embroidery: stitch length must be two times the distance between two stitches, the other side of the stitches must be as flawless as the main side, design angles must obey precise rules.

Several kind of patterns exist, many of them of chinese origin, but japanese embroiderers has developed at least as many throughout the centuries.
Some of these patterns are:

  • Tate-jima (縦縞) - Vertical bands
  • Yoko-jima (横縞) - Horizontal bands
  • Kōshi (格子) - checked
  • Hishi-moyō (菱模様) - diamonds
  • Kikkō - hexagons (tortoise shell)
