Suiboku-ga 水墨画 Japanese painting workshop
Landscape realized with Indian ink sumi 墨 and Japanese watercolor
held by Shoko Okumura 奥村祥子

What is suiboku-ga

China ink painting, called suiboku-ga, is a meditative artistic practice, spiritually rooted in Zen Buddhism. Even if this ink gives life to a monochrome world, its tonalities and transparencies allow to capture the spirit of the pictorial subject.

Hues and nuances, with just a hint of color, outline peaks, rocks and trees, all in a few simple strokes, fluid and delicate at the same time. The meditative calm inherent in the pictorial act, associated with the representation of subjects taken from nature, instill in the practitioner a feeling of awareness and intimate concentration.

During the workshop, the students will be introduced to the preparation of the various shades of china and will learn to use them for the representation of landscapes.

The symbol of the moon in Japan is frequented in the art: it was decided to dedicate this workshop to the theme of the night landscape. The goal is to learn how to do the nuance working the sumi with the brush and then painting a moon veiled by clouds.

Making of a suiboku-ga painting

This method for preparing the background is very important for floreal subjects and for landscapes. The painting will be realized on paper mounted on a panel with the mizubari method (水 張 り) (literally "spread the paper with water"); traditionally, this is a preliminary and fundamental step in Japanese painting.
